Lorwyn Eclipsed Ongoing Previews

Return to the whimsical and dangerous world of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor! With the upcoming release of Lorwyn Eclipsed on January 23, 2026, Wizards of the Coast has begun teasing the "eclipsed" state of the plane—a third, eerie reality where the sun and moon hang locked in the sky together.

While the full preview season officially kicks off on January 5, 2026, we’ve already seen a handful of heavy-hitting cards and mechanics that set the stage for this dual-natured expansion. Here is a summary of the new cards and highlights previewed so far on Scryfall.

1. The Legends of Duality

The core of Lorwyn Eclipsed revolves around the shifting identities of its inhabitants. Several key legends have been revealed, showcasing a "flip" or "modal" nature that reflects the transition between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor.

  • Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight: These are the twin gods of the plane. Eirdu represents the order and eternal day of Lorwyn, while Isilu embodies the chaotic, perpetual night of Shadowmoor. They seem to be the primary drivers of the new "Eclipsed" lore.

  • Ashling, Rekindled // Ashling, Rimebound: Everyone’s favorite Flamekin is back! This version highlights her journey from a bright beacon of flame to a frozen, vengeful spirit.

  • Sygg, Wanderwine Wisdom // Sygg, Wanderbrine Shield: The Merrow (Merfolk) of the plane continue their tradition of tactical, defensive, and tribal-focused gameplay.

2. The Return of the Shock Lands

In one of the biggest reveals for Standard and Pioneer players, Lorwyn Eclipsed features a cycle of Borderless Reversible Shock Lands. These cards (like Temple Garden, Steam Vents, and Blood Crypt) feature one side with Lorwyn-themed art and the other with Shadowmoor-themed art. They are mechanically identical to the Ravnica shock lands but offer a gorgeous new aesthetic for the first time in a Standard set.

3. Notable New Spells

  • Ashling’s Command: A versatile modal spell that gives players the choice between aggressive red effects and defensive utility, fitting the "Command" cycle tradition.

  • Bitterbloom Bearer: A stunning nod to the classic Bitterbloom. This card looks to be a chase rare, especially with the serialized versions featuring art by the legendary Rebecca Guay.

  • Unexpected Assistance: A new blue instant with Convoke, allowing your creatures to help pay for card draw—perfect for the tribal-heavy environment of Lorwyn.

  • Mutable Explorer: A card that likely interacts with the "Shapeshifter" or "Changeling" themes that were so prevalent in the original block.

4. Mechanics to Watch

  • Kindred (Tribal): The "Kindred" card type returns, ensuring that your spells can benefit from tribal synergies (e.g., Kindred Sorcery — Elf).

  • Blight: Featured heavily in the "Blight Curse" Commander deck, this mechanic focuses on -1/-1 counters and punishing opponents for having weakened creatures.

  • Convoke: Returning from previous sets, Convoke fits perfectly with the go-wide strategies of Kithkin and Elves.

5. Special Frames & Treatments

Collector enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to:

  • Fable Frames: Showcase cards with a "storybook" art style that looks like classic fairy tale illustrations.

  • Serialized Cards: As mentioned, Bitterbloom Bearer will have a serialized "Double Rainbow" foil version.

  • Borderless Art: Many of the legends and shock lands will receive full-art treatments.
